I really do not understand all the hatred of the new GTO.

It isn't american, what Gm car is now a days? The fbody, thats a laugh. I just don't get how some people can be so hypocrtical about different cars. They never seemed to care that the FBody was made in canada..now all of the sudden the GTO is unamerican?

Well lets take its lack of style argument from the old GTO owners, they didn't seem to care in 64 when it was a trim model of the tempest and not even it's own vehicle...yet now this one is boring. The only thing boring is that argument since styling is completely subjective to everyone.

Or that the new GTO is just a holden, the bird was just a camaro.. every GMC truck is just a chevy or cadillac. At least we don't see the other version of the car in the states. Would people be happy if they had no idea it was based of the holden..knowing people, most likely.

I don't even care that they don't like, just that they don't like it for the stupidest most hypocritcal reasons...especially some so called "pontiac enthusiast" fbody owners on other varsious sites.... Hate it because you dont have one, or because it priced to high or something valid...not for these dumb reasons...I have just started calling them all jealous..it makes them pretty mad and its really funny...try it some time

They are so busy hating the car that they are going to miss out on the next era of GTO.

"The fbody, thats a laugh. I just don't get how some people can be so hypocrtical about different cars." And you wonder where the hatred comes from! With comments like that what do you expect. And "the bird was just a camaro", what does that mean? They both came out in '67 so perhaps the Camaro is just a Firebird......

Not all new GTO lovers hate the F bods. I like and appreciate them for what they are. These are two different cars targeted at two different types of drivers for the most part, there is some cross-segment targeting though. It's just a shame that both can't be offered without people thinking they have to claim loyalty to one over the other.

Just to elaborate on a quote if I could.

They both came out in '67 so perhaps the Camaro is just a Firebird......

The Camaro was given the green light long before the Firebird. The Firebird was actually almost an afterthought as DeLorean wanted to bring out a two seater with a straight 6 OHC engine more like the Corvette than the Camaro. When he got the snub from GM, they basically did a quickie redesign with the Camaro to make a Firebird out of it to get it in showrooms in time.

Maybe you already knew that but I think it is important that one understands the history of something and that the truth of the matter is passed along. Not a flame just trying to shed some light on the situation.

I don't care what anyone says! I love F-Bodies, and I don't care which came first! And I love the goat, even if it isn't retro! I like it as it it. Why everyone gotta hate one or the other? They're both awesome cars!

People's opinion that doesn't coincide with my own matter little to me. My own opinion matters the most. And in my opinion, the new goat is beautiful!

I like the new GTO but it's exterior styling is its weakest point.

I wish the car had more "old" GTO styling cues.

I wish it weighed about 300 pounds less.

I wish it had more trunk room.

I wish mine was here already!

I don't know any car, ever produced that didn't have some problem or that someone didn't gripe about in some way.

I have been a Pontiac fan since 1958 when my father bought his first one, a 58 Super Chief that was a super car and FAST, even though it had the 2bbl engine.

I have had several old Pontiacs in the last dozen or so years, a 66 Grand Prix and a 62 Catalina (Nostalgia drag 389 with the 425A motor, best of 13.90 at 105 mph in the 1/4 mile with 8" slicks, 4.88 gear and 4500 pounds race weight!). My friends in the GTO club locally all seem to dislike the new GTO, but I can bet you lots of money, NONE of them will turn down a ride once I pull into their driveway! And I can't wait to meet some of them at the drag strip.

Plus I will get to have fun with MY new age GTO at a road race track, and you can bet their old cars won't ever get out and play like that!

Yes, I LOVE the old GTO's they were great cars, they were what they were, light, fast in a straight line, and good in a corner for cars of the day. Set up properly they are a ball to drive today and super dependable. But I decided that instead of spending 30 to 40 large for an old GTO that I won't ever take out in the rain, or get a lot of use out of, I wanted the new one. 350 hp, 6-speed manual...what isn't to like.

I just hope I fit in the thing (big guy) comfortably. From the early reports, I am pretty sure the performance will be to my liking. I may still turn the car down, but I doubt it.

Quicksilver six speed, due to arrive in Feb or March now...... :type:

Be happy the new GTO isn't another retro fad car. Look at Fords rediculous Mustang, T-Bird, and whatever they will pull out of their a$$ next. So the GTO isn't real aggresive looking, thats OK, it's modern, and fresh.

I hate it cause the dealers said it would be in showrooms in jan, but no luck
I hate it cause I cant test drive it (dam 20 years old)
I hate it cause I cant have one

I am a die hard fbody fan, but I like the new GTO in a different yet similar asspect in that I love the performance, yet its not as in your face as a WS6 TA. That impulse blue GTO in th corner just looks flat out sweet. I really hope that anyone in the NJ area can give me a ride in there GTO cause that would just be awesome. :woot: Ill make sure I dont hump the car for too long.

I keep hearing/reading everybody say that the exterior styling on the GTO is week or isn't aggressive eneough , but honestly I think this is from people who have only seen the pictures.

I went the the dealership about a week ago and they had a impulse blue with grey/black interior GTO in the showroom. Pictures do not do this car justice , the look up close is extremly impressive , it has a low squat look that makes it look like it wants to move, not your average run of the mill agressive styling but still sleek and mean , honestly I wasn't going to get a sports car this year because I don't like mustangs, can't afford a vet and honestly haven't been to impressed by anything on the American market , but this car has impressed me. So I'm getting one , well anyway :eatarrow: ,all I'm trying to say is hold off on your opinion untill you actually see this car. It really is impressive, it just doesn't come with all those stupid flares wings and other goofy add ons you see in the asian cars(wrx, evo) . when running it has a low rumble that sounds like real power, and eneough room in the interrior for all three of my girlfriends.. :bs: anyway I guess if all my rambling had a point it would be not to make an opinion on this car untill you had a chance to sit in it.... my 02c

It's funny, but the plainer styling of this car fits me perfectly. The 96 SS SCREAMED OUT for attention and spoke a silent, potent language to every Trooper I met on the highway....."HEY Officer! Look at me! I must be BREAKING THE LAW!" Yes, my 96 SS was never at a loss for words.:D

The new Goat is stylish in an understated way that should make life on the highway much less eventful. That is a very good thing.

This is my first post on this site.I was considering buying an El Dorado and Cadillac quit making them,I can't really afford the Vette and along came this new GTO.Like Node I had a 96 Impala but it was the proverbial cop magnet,I swear that the cops will let someone going faster than me get by just so they could pull me over.I haven't made a deposit on the GTO yet because I haven't seen one in person, one of the local dealers send me an email last weekend and said they should have one coming this week,it's a black one with 6 speed.I like the fact that this car may turn out to be the all time winner of the sleeper award of american automobile history. With all this rumors about the LS2 for '05 I'm a little hesitant as to buying this year,I'll probably wait a couple of months and try to make up my mind.Nice site you got here.HF

I dont know if this will make you feel any better about not being able to get an Eldorado, but the were about the same price as a Vette high 40's. There are good deals on Vettes right now, 2K rebate and 60 months 0% financing.

Hey Hectic, welcome to the site. Great first post. You must have not been around during the days of the T-type, Syclone and SHO. GTO will make a nice understated performance car, but it will certainly not hold the sleeper value any of those cars did the day they were unleashed on the public.

Wow!,thanks for the quick remarks Chotton and Scott.Yes,I thought about the Vette long and hard but I just can't convince myself that at this time I can justify the expenditure for a two seater. But for the record let me state that in my opinion for the money the Corvette is the best buy on a trully sports car,bar none.Again, that's just my opinion.I was leaning for the Caddy for the room, trunk, two doors, seating for four and still have a performance mill under the hood.I honestly think that the GTO will fit those needs for me.Scott yes I've been around to see those vehicles that you mentioned but I'll have to say that at the time that they came out, compared to the other vehicles that were out there there were some l wicked visual cues that were letting you know that something was just not right about them, those are great examples of the theme. One can go further back to the 60's and find fine examples of sleepers that one could custom order that way, those long options lists are gone for good.My take on the new GTO and the slepper status comes from the fact that the car has the very familiar jelly bean shape that almost every other car out there has, that, whether we like it or not is the shape of cars of our times.Everybody is offering large wheels on new vehicles not just performance oriented ones, the two exhaust tips coming out of the same side are the crown jewels.I understand that the GTO heritage is that of in your face visual and real performance and that may be a turn down for some but one can't deny that the choice of mechanical components on this car is what really will set it aside. Thanks for letting me rant,I can see myself coming to this board more often to see your opinions on this hobby/obssesion of ours and share some of my own.

Actually, I had my heart set on getting a GTO in the next couple of years UNTIL I saw it in person. It just didn't do anything for me. I'd say my biggest complaint is the look and size of the wheels. They could have done MUCH better, and they look too small. Especially in the rear. The wheels look tiny. I sure hope they improve the looks, and give it some bigger and decent looking wheels in the upcoming years. The car certainly has potential.

Absolutely. This is a perfect case of why the published numbers don't tell the whole story. Did you ever thrash one of those cars? Simply amazing back then.

You have to project back to The Day when the SHO was released to put it in perspective. What was available? 5.7TPI Corvettes that ran 14's, F-cars that would barely hold their own against the Mustang LX, Turbo Regals were discontinued, etc. Then along comes a barely spiffed up Taurus 4-door that will stay right beside if not beat a pony car from stop light to stop light. In fact, in the real world, a pony car of the day (not counting the extremely cool 89 TTA) would have all it could do to escape a SHO at any speed. I call that a worthy sleeper in the truest sense.

Pretty much every argument against the new GTO was applied ten years ago when Chevrolet debuted the Impala SS, and after those hit the streets the hatred pretty myuch evaporated. That and everything I've encountered I can easily refute.

Basically, either you like a car or you don't. I just so happen to really like the new GTO, so much so that I plan on buying one.
