: Pontiac Debuts Production Solstice
formula79 01-05-2004, 01:33 AM Pontiac Debuted the Production Solstice today. The good news is it has a nice interior and weighs less than 3000lbs. The bad news is initially it will only get a 170 HP I4 with a supercharged version coming sometime in the future.

Howie 01-05-2004, 11:53 AM Any idea on pricing? Being an 06 model I image these numbers haven't been figure yet, but is there a traget price they're shooting for?
Tails 01-05-2004, 12:32 PM I almost wish the GTO wasn't coming......I said almost!!!

Davbo 01-05-2004, 08:13 PM I can't really use a 2 seater.......but if I could, I'd get a vette!

I have heard the target price will be around $20k, can anyone else confirm this? I know production numbers will be low for the first year, similar to the numbers of the GTO.
1966_GTO_ 01-05-2004, 10:14 PM Car and Driver says the base price will be in the low $20k range. With that 4-banger in it, not even worth that much. It will turn some heads though, and is great for a little toy. I can't believe they built a whole new platform for it, although two other GM concepts will use the same platform if put into production.
critic2029 01-06-2004, 12:47 AM I believe that it is designed to compete with the Miata so probably around 20 to 25k.
HSV_255GTO 01-06-2004, 01:31 AM Would anyone like to guess that GM will base this car off the Opel/Vauxhall VX220? Volkswagen is also comming out with its back-to-basics roadster around the same time the Solistace should debut. 2006 should an exciting year for the sports car segment! :D
Nocturn 01-06-2004, 05:32 AM Engine cylinders aside its a good car, it might not have the V8 rumble, but with such little weight even with a I4 its gunna get up and move.
geekoid 01-09-2004, 03:02 AM I am glad that Pontiac is going to produce the Solstice. The transition from concept to production turned out very well. It is a little disappointing that the supercharged powerplant is coming later, however, the Solstice should still perform quite well with the initial engine. It is going to need some more grunt to keep up with the S2000, although it will probably be $8,000-$10,000 less. The upcoming comparo tests should be interesting. Solstice vs. Miata vs. S2000.
1966_GTO_ 01-09-2004, 05:03 PM The S2000 is not in the same category as the Solstice or Miata. It is bigger, faster, and overall just a better car. Cars like the Toyota MR2 and the Lotus Elise are in the same category as the Solstice and Miata.
Tails 01-09-2004, 06:36 PM I thought the Elise was around $40K and predictied 0-60 in around 5.0. That would be way out of league for the Solstice.

OK, I was mistaken. How did they get a 4.9 0-60 time out of a Toyota 4-banger??? I would still think that the Solstice will steal a couple Elise buyers who caan get something that looks just as coo for half the price. I wouldn't expect Lotus performance from the Solstice, but I know I wouldn't spend $39k on the little Elise.
Tails 01-10-2004, 02:41 PM It is around 190 HP and weighs 1975 lb. http://www.rapidcars.com/elisespecs.html And scary to drive such a small car.

TriShield 01-11-2004, 05:49 PM The Solstice isn't based on any other existing GM vehicle (it is not a Opel/Vauxhall). It's new from the ground up, and future GM vehicles will probably utilize the architecture in order to recoup the investment in it.
This is a Miata style car too guys, it's not a muscle car. That's the GTO's job. This is a pure, two seat sports car that's built to be fun, affordable, and handle like nobody's business.
Very cool.
JCS30TH 01-24-2004, 12:15 AM That car with a s/c and 220 or so hp would be a blast. To bad the front end is so hideous
and they got the f***ing tach on the wrong side
Price was said to be starting at under $20K, at the NAIAS though the person giving the demo said it would be just over $18K :dribble:
I Expect the turbo/supercharged GXP version to cost about $3,000 more.
