Really doesn't matter what kind of car you have, it's how much money you have to put into it. Seems like little rich kids love them Neons. Like riding in a sardine can, not for me.
I raced an SRT-4 with a 60 trim turbo which I believe is a stg 3, yeah I was with him in 2nd then 3rd it was 1.5 cars and 4th he was about 4-5 cars on me.. I gave up at 140 thinking I could catch up.. nope.. he kept going.. quick ****ers..

I just traded in a 05 srt-4 w/ stage 2, full intake and exhaust. mid 12 sec car. those little things are incredible. A lot of guys are having a lot of problems with different things. So not very reliable. My 06 silver GTO is not as fast now but I didn't buy it to race and want to keep it for a long time. Don't forget ANY turbo car can be easily modified. A lot easier and cheaper then a normaly aspirated car.
I don't care HOW fast they are...I KNOW they're fast...but Neons are for FAT CHICKS...with a buncha kids that smear the windows all up and drop cookie crumbs all over the interior. If someone ever challenges me to a race with a Neon, I'll decline, then give them the option of a fist fight. That'd be more fun.

This reminds me of the classic joke that poses the question as to what fat chicks and mopeds have in common...
We have a fue SRTs around here, but all have only light mods. As long as I don't break loose off the bat, all is still a GTO win. I recently drove a Stage 3 with an accessory pac, & that little s--- was quick now! Heavy torque steer off the line & floating all over the place over 80mph. All I can say is it was a blast to drive; to make it perform, you really need to know your car; & no one wants to get beat by a Neon.

The way that I figure it, the car is what it is. That is, it isn't too bad for a little 230 Hp vehicle. If cost were not the deciding factor, I would not choose the SRT-4 over the GTO, but if that is all I could afford...
However, I understand the humor you experienced with this particular kid. He is just unaware of the muscle that lies beneath the hood of the GTO. The problem stems from the inaccurate magazine articles people gobble up and treat as gospel. They read without questioning the validity of what is printed, belonging to the Church of the Supremely Disinformed. At the least, you should have offered to suck the paint off of his car.
My 06 Goat comes in next week, and I'll be trolling for the Mustangs, LS1 Vettes and before, and of course the Porsches.
Rice, schmice...if I see one, I'll give her a shot.
Just remember that as you step on it, you can count like the old days "one Mississippi, two Mississippi"...but it will be 10 cents, 20 cents, 30 cents.
