Trying to decide between 04 and 05

Hey all, I'm a prospective GTO buyer, and I currently have a pre-approval for 18,500 max. I've seen local 04's for around 18k sticker with around 30,000 miles. Not too many 05's here, the few that the dealers have are more around 23-25k but will only have around 10,000 miles.

I know the 04 and 05 switched from the LS1 to the LS2, which is about 50 horsepower, but is there much of a difference in reliability between the two? And will i really notice the 50 horsepower? What other differences are there in the two years other than the hood scoop? I plan on keeping whichever I get stock, so modding a LS1 to make it as strong as an LS2 is out.

I just want to know in peoples opinions if it's really worth saving up a bit and paying at least 3-4k more for one model year later.

I would go with a 05 for a couple of reasons; I like the duel exhaust and the hood scoops. Other than that and the fact it’s fun to say ya I have 400hp that is the other reason. The true reason I went with a 06 was I wanted new, but for the money and that low of miles it would be very hard to pass it up. I do not know about any other things good or bad. I have had no problems and I understand a 04 is as good as any. I think the best thing you can do is drive them both and you should have your answer.
Good luck.
PS you will love the car

Pump that 3 to 4 K into an 04 and you'll be over 400 HP at the flywheel easy.

It's up to you though. Good luck.

I actually think $18k for a 2004 is a little high. Maybe it's just the region of the country ... I've seen them for less than that around here.

The LS2 is a significant step up over the LS1. You'll feel those 50 horses. The hood scoops and dual exhaust are just frosting on the cake. I'd get the 2005.

When you say you've been pre-approved for $18,500 max ... it makes me wonder if you shouldn't look at something else till you get more established financially? It's just sad to see people taking out car loans for 4-5-6 years ... it makes it very hard for them to get on top of their finances. If your looking for a fast coupe you could pick up an f-body and have a lot of fun for a year or two till you get more established. Just my opinion.

No choice to be made--You've just gotta have the LS2--400hp is hard to argue against.
Cheers, Pickles.

Yeah dude go with the 05. 50 horse power is definitely felt! You should save up and get that one. If you plan on keeping it stock then why not get the extra horses
