I've built my own since the late 80's.
If I had to buy an off-the-shelf PC, it would be a Dell.
I won't buy a cheap no-name brand. I won't buy a cheap name-brand like Gateway either since cheap is cheap. I won't buy HP/Compaq because they've always used proprietary hardware that's really expensive to upgrade or fix, not to mention the fact that they're overpriced to begin with.
My next PC will probably be a Dell 'cause I'm tired of spending so much time researching all the parts.

I'm a Mac person, so Apple. Don't want anything else really.
If I had to, for a PC, I'd have to say Dell right now.

While Dell has great support and I can't say my experience at a small company was bad, I can say it's a good thing they have great support because you will need it.
The last two plus years, I've been working for a Fortune 100 company and while we still build our servers, every desktop is an IBM, thats right IBM. We have about 20 support calls for printers per 1 for desktops and the desktops outnumber printers 4 to 1.
P.S. The printers aren't IBM or HP for that matter.

Mac. I also have a homebuilt.
As for the Gateway, we have one of those gateway stores in town. Some guy was pissed because his new computer wouldn't work, so he walked into the store and smashed the PC! He got some disturbing the public or something out of it. Pretty funny though. That was a couple of years ago.

Working in IT since right out of college, I am tired of playing with computers by the time I get home so I long ago got off the roll-your-own track. We are strictly a HP/Compaq shop in the office but I just bought a Dell three weeks ago for my wife and son - FWIW...
