My daily commutes have become rather boring. I've only seen 3-4 05 GTs on the road. None asking for trouble. I kept getting into situations with the hemi-headed cowboys who thought their big trucks were quick, but they've all given up.

Thought I had a 350Z yesterday, but they didn't want any part of my IBM. An old Vette driver gave me the thumbs up, so at least he had an idea. Had some young thing in a Lexus 300 try to beat me across an intersection to a merge lane but that was hardly worth the fuel to blow her off. And then there was a pickup driver who came flying up behind me, dogged my a$$ until he thought he had a chance to blow around me on a double yellow line and got a taste of 4th gear.

I gotta get me one of those magnifying rear view mirrors 'cause the cars behind me get so small I can't see 'em very well.

Rock on :friday:

mldavis, do you know if anyone has run against a WRX STI?

I came up behind one the other day but the traffic gods were not with me and I couldn't find a safe place to run him.

Let me know.

I just got my GTO last month so I haven't gotten it out to the track to see the effect of altitude on the LS2. I suspect the altitude out here tends to give an advantage to turbo & supercharged cars. Where I live I am at 5700 feet above sea level.

Heh...those are VERY fast cars! Don't be disappointed if he rips you out of the hole because he probably will. I think they're ugly but that doesn't matter when you've got a light AWD Turbo.

An Sti will probably beat an 2004, but from a roll an 05-06 should be able to take it, especially on the top end.

I dont think an 05 GTO would even need a roll to beat an STI. I think with a roll an 04 could give it a run for the money.

2005 Subaru Impreza WRX STi

Horsepower: 300 hp
Curb Weight: 3298 lbs.

Thus I dont think an 04 can take one, they have the same trap speeds but a Sti can consistantly run a 13.1-13.3 @ 101-102 due to its AWD.

vs 350 and 3789 LBS, the HP to LBS difference is much greater in the 04 compared to the 05.

An evo is really close to an STI and I was able to slowly walk away from one on the freeway from about 65 to 120 then he gave up.

Not many STi's here in Ozarkland. I've seen one bright blue one but always going the other way. Don't know if he'd want to run or not.

There aren't many around, but watch for Audi A8's, too. They have quicker 0-60 times than the 05's due to AWD.

But both of these cars are in a different category. The A8 is outta range on price along with the M5-E60s and the 550 Mercs. The STi is a dirt cheap little ricer that fits the motorcycle category better than a car. And we don't waste fuel on running bikes due to power/weight disadvantges.

You can't beat everything on 4 wheels out there. I don't go around baiting other cars at stop lights because I don't have that many in non-congested areas. I create most of my embarassment out on the open road. The Goat is a relatively heavy car and it lacks traction in lower gears due to tire/wheel clearance limitations and IRS. But that gives it advantages in other areas.

We also have the advantage of a proven engine design and relatively high torque at lower RPM. The LS2 will be kicking a$$ long after the "ran fast and didn't last" turbos are melted down for recycling.

But the Goat is also a darn nice car. Lovely interior, best seats on the planet (that I've found), great handling especially considering its curb weight, excellent fuel mileage on the highway (M6), comfortable back seat (if you can get back there), stealthy, and apparently to become a real collector's item in it's current form.

The Evo may have a little less HP but the times for it are just as good as the STI. I think that these 2 cars may have the GTO to 60 but eventually the Goat will be able to over take either of them. Just like your story about taking them on at high speed.

I agree with mldavis 100% But just for the record I'm seeing 0-60 times of 4.7-4.9 for the Sti in which case the 05 should be able to take it. But those might be times from one of those car mags that don't know how to drive... <_<

I havent seen a magazine get better than 4.9 for a GTO, but I have seen a lot of EVOs and STIs getting between 4.3 and 4.7. It's pretty easy to get a great launch with those things since all you have to do is rev the heck out them and drop the clutch. The GTO requires much more skill and finnesse.
